Hi neighbours! My name is Nick Dickinson-Wilde. I have strong family ties to the Sooke area and have lived here since my teen years; my wife, Suzi, was raised in Sooke; and we have built a home and business and are raising our child here.
I have a busy and successful career in web development, providing remote services to both Canadian and international agencies - I was a regular zoom user long before it got big! Web development has made me a creative problem solver, adept at handling rapidly evolving priorities. My current role at Taoti Creative has also helped me hone my team management skills. I have contributed to organizing professional events ranging from international conferences with thousands of attendees to small coffee shop get-togethers for local web developers.
My wife and I own and operate Sooke Shukokai Karate, at the corner of Sooke and Church roads. We both trained in Shukokai Karate with the previous owner for over a decade and gradually took on teaching responsibilities before our Sensei retired and chose us to continue the dojo in his stead. We love sharing the amazing benefits - physical, mental, and emotional - that this sport has with our community. We’re proud to be the only karate dojo in Sooke that is affiliated with Karate BC, the provincially recognized governing body for karate, and authorized to work with KidSport. I am a provincially accredited Judge A with Karate BC. I am also a director with Vancouver Island Karate Society and involved in all our island tournaments.
Perhaps unsurprisingly I’m involved in other sports as well, including being a big Sooke Celtic fan, a member of Sooke Soccer, and, as of September, a soccer parent. I also enjoy my membership in the Sooke Horseshoe club.
I spend as much time as possible outdoors, enjoying the stunning natural beauty of the Sooke area, gardening, on my bike, or hiking with my family. You’re sure to see me with my son, Will, who has become a very enthusiastic helper, at any invasive plant removal events with Friends of Sooke Park or Jaun de Fuca Trails Society. I also love to walk for good causes, including Coldest Night of the Year and Mike Thomas Memorial walk for Sooke Hospice.
As a young professional, business owner, and father, I believe I will bring a valuable perspective to Sooke Council and represent the needs and priorities of families and the next generation. Families and children are the lifeblood of small communities and I am deeply committed to making sure Sooke is not only a good place to raise our children but also somewhere our children will, in turn, be able to build their own lives, businesses and families.
